Netflix's new feature automatically downloads recommended shows

23 Feb 2021 | Rasmus Larsen |

After introducing 'Smart Downloads' three years ago, Netflix is launching 'Downloads For You' that can automatically download recommended shows or movies to your device.

Downloads For You

Netflix's recommendation engine can now automatically prepare and download content for those moments when you are stuck on a plane or in an area without good internet coverage. - "Today we’re launching Downloads For You, a new feature that automatically downloads recommended shows or movies to your mobile device based on your tastes. Whether you’re a comedy fan stuck on a long car ride or a rom com lover without internet, we do the work so there is always something new waiting to entertain and delight you," the company announced.

Netflix Downloads For You

Netflix was hesitant to introduce offline downloads after its competitors started to embrace the functionality. Ever since, however, it has enhanced downloads in a number of ways. First with 'Smart Downloads' that can automatically download new episodes of TV shows that you are watching. And now with 'Downloads For You'. The new feature is available now on Android mobile devices globally. Netflix says that it will "be testing soon on iOS". It is not currently supported on PCs or TV devices. In related news, the company said in a statement to MacRumors that it is not currently testing spatial audio support for Apple AirPods.

Netflix: Downloads for You - how it works

1. Go to the Downloads tab on your mobile device and toggle on Downloads For You. 2. Choose the amount of content you want downloaded to your device (1GB, 3GB, or 5GB) and click Turn On. The more space you allow, the more recommendations Netflix will download for you.
