The movie was supposed to premiere in theatres worldwide but Turning Red will instead be the third Pixar to debut exclusively on Disney+ at no extra charge.
Pixar on Disney+
Omicron has forced Disney to reconsider its release strategy once again, affecting the upcoming Pixar animated feature film Turning Red about a 13-year old girl who turns into a giant red panda whenever she gets too excited.
- "Disney+ subscribers around the world enthusiastically embraced Pixar’s Academy Award-winning Soul and the critically acclaimed Luca when they premiered exclusively on the service and we look forward to bringing them Pixar’s next incredible feature film Turning Red," said Kareem Daniel, Chairman, Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution.
Turning Red will debut exclusively on Disney+
Disney's shuffle is another hit to movie theatres in the US and elsewhere. While Spider-Man: Now Way Home proved that there is still a big audience for action movies, the same is not true for family films yet, according to Disney.
- "Given the delayed box office recovery, particularly for family films, flexibility remains at the core of our distribution decisions as we prioritize delivering the unparalleled content of The Walt Disney Company to audiences around the world, said Kareem Daniel.
Turning Red will be the third Pixar movie in a row to debut exclusively on Disney+ after Soul and Luca.
New major releases from Disney are usually available to enjoy in 4K Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos but Disney has yet to comment on details for Turning Red.
Turning Red will be available to stream on Disney+ from March 11 in all regions where Disney+ is available.
