First 240Hz OLED display coming to laptops later this year

04 May 2022 | Rasmus Larsen |

The world's first OLED display with a 240Hz refresh rate will make it way to high-end laptops such as the new Razer Blade 15 by late 2022.

Current OLED displays in TVs, monitors and portable devices typically have a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz or 60Hz. The industry is ready to take the next step with 240Hz OLED later this year.

The 15.6-inch OLED display has 1440p resolution and can reach 400 nits brightness. It covers the full DCI-P3 color gamut and also boasts a true 1ms response time as opposed to the claimed 1ms response time of many LCD panels.

It is not clear who the supplier is but Japan OLED (JOLED) is a likely candidate. JOLED already supplies RGB OLED monitor panels to Eizo, LG Electronics and others. Update: More likely Samsung Display.

The Razer Blade 15

The 240Hz OLED panel will show up in Razer's Blade 15 gaming laptop and possibly other laptops in the last quarter of 2022. As for the laptop it features a 12th gen Intel Core i9-12900H processor, Nvidia RTX 3070 Ti laptop GPU, and 32GB of DDR5 RAM. It will start at $3500. Razer already offers a laptop with a 240Hz LCD but you can expect much improved picture quality from the 240Hz OLED due to pixel-level control of luminance and color combined with true black and very high contrast. In 2009 and 2010, a few TV brands launched 240Hz LCD TVs with 1080p resolution and Vizio is planning to launch a 4K TV that supports 240Hz refresh at 1080p later this year. We have yet to see the first 240Hz 4K OLED TVs.
