Samsung unveils its first QD-OLED monitor, Odyssey G8

At IFA 2022, Samsung has officially unveiled its first QD-OLED monitor. The 34-inch Odyssey G8 features 3440x1440 resolution and 175Hz refresh rate.

We brought you news on the monitor in February. In the meantime Samsung has changed the model name to G85SB. The monitor is based on Samsung Display's QD-OLED panel which is already available in Dell Alienware's AW3423DW.

Samsung's version is also designed for gaming and has much the same specifications meaning 34 inches, a 1800R curvature, 3440x1440 resolution in 21:9 aspect ratio, 175Hz refresh rate, true 0.1 ms response time, 99.3% DCI-P3 color space, deep blacks, and VRR / AMD FreeSync support.

Not least, G85SB offers HDR10 support with the display hardware to actually do High Dynamic Range. Samsung Electronics did not confirm peak brightness but the panel is specified to 1000 nits peak brightness by Samsung Display, the panel maker.

Cloud gaming built in

In addition, Samsung has implemented its Gaming Hub in Odyssey G8 meaning that users in compatible regions (Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Korea, Spain, US, UK) can access cloud gaming services. At this time, the following gaming apps are available: Xbox, GeForce Now, Google Stadia, Utomik, and Amazon Luna (U.S. only) – no console required.

Samsung said that the monitor has a height adjustable stand as well as tilt functionality. It also features CoreSync and Core Lighting+ lighting technology on the back for more immersive gaming experiences. PCs can be connected via HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4. There is also a built-in 5W stereo speaker. Samsung will be showcasing the monitor for the first time at IFA 2022 in Berlin this week and FlatpanelsHD will be there to check it out. Look forward to more news. The monitor will be available globally from Q4 2022 and pricing will be announced later. Dell's version costs $1300.
