After a mediocre Uncharted movie, The Last of Us sets the stage for Sony's PlayStation Productions studio's 10 planned adaptations of videogames.
In 2020, Sony announced that its new PlayStation Productions studio was developing an initial slate of three movies and seven TV shows based on PlayStation games, but it is only now that we are starting to get a grasp on Sony's big project that could lead to even more titles.
Since then, a few of the series have been reimagined as movies. They will all be produced by PlayStation Productions (in co-production with partners) for cinema or streaming services such as Amazon Prime Video, HBO, Peacock, and Netflix.
The Last of Us is the second project after Uncharted, and the critically acclaimed HBO series has already been renewed for a second season. The next step is a Gran Turismo movie that will premiere in mid-August 2023.
Sony's PlayStation Productions has a God of War series planned with Amazon Prime Video
Microsoft has also dipped its toes in the water with released or planned adaptations of Xbox games such as Gears of War, Fallout, and Halo. Microsoft's vision for adaptations of Xbox games is not as clear-cut as Sony's, but perhaps the rival's initial success will encourage Microsoft to try to further tap into its significant base of gamers.
Sony has announced 9 of the 10 projects that are part of the first phase. Here is what else to expect this year and beyond.
