Super Bowl will be available in Dolby Vision for the first time

06 Feb 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

Super Bowl LVII will for the first time be available to watch in Dolby Vision exclusively from Comcast's Xfinity while other broadcasters will deliver it in 4K HDR10 or SDR.

Comcast's Xfinity was first to broadcast the FIFA World Cup in Dolby Vision and later this week it will become the first to broadcast this year's Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles in Dolby's HDR video format.

Comcast cable TV subscribers in the US need the Xfinity X1 box and a TV that supports Dolby Vision. The news was confirmed by both Comcast and Dolby.

Other broadcasters such as Fox (apps), DirecTV, Verizon and YouTube TV will broadcast/stream it in 4K SDR or 4K HDR10. However, all 4K transmissions are upscaled from HD resolution. While on-demand streaming in HDR is becoming quite common, it is still rare to see live content transmitted in the wider range of luminance and colors. Hopefully we will see more of that in the near future. Super Bowl LVII will kick off at 6:30 pm ET on Sunday, February 12.
