13 Jun 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

Panasonic has today at an event in Berlin unveiled three new OLED TV ranges for 2023 in addition to the previously announced MZ2000 with MLA OLED. MZ800 features Google TV.

In 2023, there will clearer differentiation between Panasonic's OLED TVs. The flagship MZ2000 features MLA OLED, MZ1500 the 'Master' OLED panel, MZ980 the standard OLED panel, and MZ800 features Google TV.

Only MZ2000 will be available in 77 inches while the three other OLED ranges will all be available in sizes ranging from 42 to 65 inches. MLA (Micro Lens Array) is the 2023 WOLED panel from LG Display with increased brightness due to micro lenses while the 'Master' OLED is the customized and somewhat brighter WOLED panel that Panasonic has used in previous flagship models, too. Panasonic has not announced plans to launch QD-OLED TVs.

Google TV and MyHomeScreen

MZ2000, MZ1500 and MZ980 will continue to use Panasonic's homegrown MyHomeScreen platform. MyHomeScreen version 8.0 with added accessibility features intended for hearing and visually impaired users and 'myScenery' nature video remastered in Dolby Atmos audio.

MZ800 will be Panasonic's first OLED TV with Google TV with access to over many more apps – over 10000, according to Google – than MyHomeScreen. All Google TVs have Chromecast and Google Assistant built-in. On the other hand MZ800 has conventional HDMI 2.0 ports with 4K60 bandwidth plus support for two optional HDMI 2.1 features (ALLM and eARC). It does not feature Panasonic's most advanced video processor either. It still supports HDR10+ and Dolby Vision but not the extension, HDR10+ Adaptive and Dolby Vision IQ, like the more expensive models.

Improved Filmmaker Mode, True Game Mode

First announced with the MZ2000 flagship model in January, an adaptive Filmmaker Mode will automatically make adjustments to the picture's color temperature based on your viewing environment. This is part of an official extension of Filmmaker Mode by the UHD Alliance.

The adaptive Filmmaker Mode will be supported in MZ2000, MZ1500 and MZ980. Panasonic said that it is made possible by its 'HCX Pro AI' processor that can make similar adaptive adjustments for other picture modes. - "Ambient colour temperature sensing has been upgraded for Filmmaker Mode, ensuring accurate picture reproduction in any lighting conditions; for example, by lowering the temperature in response to warmly lit conditions, or brightening the dark tones in extremely light environments," explained Panasonic. The 2023 OLED models are still color-tuned by Stefan Sonnenfeld, Founder and CEO of Company 3 in Hollywood. The company noted that Sonnenfeld is using Panasonic OLED TVs as client reference monitors in his daily workflow. Also first announced at CES, a new True Game Mode in MZ2000, MZ1500 and MZ980 "brings all the colour accuracy features available for movies into the world of gaming, while improved HDR Tone Mapping delivers source-oriented expression from the gaming device", according to Panasonic. It can be auto-calibrated too with Calman. Panasonic is in general drumming up the gaming capabilities of its OLED TVs, which is covered in more detail in this separate article. It includes support for HDMI 2.1 VRR, AMD FreeSync, and Nvidia G-Sync Compatible in addition to 4K120 over HDMI 2.1. All of the 2023 OLED models support Dolby Atmos internally and over eARC for output to a soundbar and receiver. The 55 and 65-inch versions of MZ1500 have front-firing speakers and a built-in subwoofer. FlatpanelsHD is confirming availability and pricing details with Panasonic in Berlin.
