Sharp becomes the third brand to embrace QD-OLED

26 Jul 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

Once a leader in LCD TVs, Sharp is now embracing OLED technology with the launch in Japan of four high-end TVs based on QD-OLED and WOLED.

Foxconn-owned Sharp is the only third brand to announce QD-OLED TVs, based on Samsung Display's panel, after Samsung and Sony launched the first QD-OLED TVs in 2022.

Brands such as Philips and TCL have also shown interest in Samsung Display's QD-OLED panel but have yet to launch TV models based on the novel technology.

Sharp was once a leader in LCD technology but was outcompeted in large part by the Korean newcomers, LG and Samsung, so it is notable that Sharp is now partnering with Samsung for QD-OLED and LG for WOLED. Sharp is the second Japanese brand to embrace QD-OLED – the other being Sony.

With Google TV

At launch, the FS1 range of 55 and 65-inch 4K QD-OLED TVs and the FQ1 line of 55 and 65-inch 4K OLED TVs (WOLED) will be available in Japan at launch. However, the TVs are prepared for the world with Google TV built-in in case Sharp decides to expand to international markets. At CES 2023, Sharp announced plans to bring high-end TVs to the US starting with miniLED LCD TVs and OLED TVs with Roku OS.

The TVs also feature HDMI 2.1 ports with VRR, WiFi 6, and Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos support. Sharp's FS1 and FQ1 models will launch in Japan in August/September so we will be sure to ask the company for an update on its international plans at the IFA show in Berlin this September. - Source: Sharp Japan
