LG rolls out fix for auto-dimming on 2022 OLED TVs (C2, G2) - update

02 Aug 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

After fixing the issue with auto-dimming in dark scenes on its 2023 models earlier this year, LG is now also rolling out a firmware fix for its 2022 OLED models, C2 and G2.
Update 8.8.2023: LG Korea has responded to FlatpanelsHD saying that the update addresses TV models with the Alpha 6 Gen 5 processor so the CS model is also compatible. LG B2 is not included in the update due to its Alpha 7 processor. LG Korea would not confirm or deny if is planning to update 2021 and earlier OLED models.
Auto-dimming on TVs comes in various forms and typically act as a safeguard against burn-in. FlatpanelsHD's investigation in 2018 into a matter where Sony OLED TVs detected a small static element in the picture such as a scoreboard during a sports match or gaming HUD and then went on to erroneously dim the full OLED panel, prompted Sony to improve its algorithm on OLED models such as A1 and AF8/A8F. For years, an overzealous algorithm (Auto Static Brightness Limiter, or ASBL) has also erroneously dimmed over time dark scenes with minimal movement on OLED TVs from LG and other brands, affecting movies such as Dune, The Batman, Blade Runner 2049, and many more. In March 2023, LG released a firmware fix for its 2023 OLED models, C3 and G3, that successfully resolved the issue with auto-dimming in dark scenes. Also read: Review: LG G3 OLED

Fix for 2022 LG OLED TVs

LG is now rolling out a new firmware (ver. 03.33.65) globally for its 2022 models, C2 and G2, that according to multiple user reports (reddit) includes the same ASBL fix for auto-dimming in dark scenes that was previously applied to the 2023 models. You can download the new firmware for your C2 or G2 model from your local LG support page (USA, UK etc.) or wait for it to show up as an over-the-air update from the TV's menu. FlatpanelsHD has approached LG Korea for comment but has not received a statement yet. We will update this article if we hear back. Firmware ver. 03.33.65 is also available for LG's CS "hybrid" model (C2 with C1 design) but it is unclear if the auto-dimming fix works on CS, too. At this time, the firmware is not available for B2.
