YouTube is now blocking ad-blockers worldwide

01 Nov 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

After running "an experiment" since May, YouTube has confirmed that it is now blocking the use of ad-blockers worldwide.

The increasing number of video ads and sponsored videos on YouTube has led more people to explore the use of ad-blockers on PCs and sometimes TVs via apps such as YouTube Vanced or SmartTubeNext.

YouTube is now officially cracking down on ad-blockers globally.

If you are using an ad-blocking tool, you will see a message stating that "video playback is blocked unless YouTube is whitelisted or the ad blocker is disabled".

- "The use of ad blockers violate YouTube’s Terms of Service. We've launched a global effort to urge viewers with ad blockers enabled to allow ads on YouTube or try YouTube Premium for an ad free experience. Ads support a diverse ecosystem of creators globally and allow billions to access their favorite content on YouTube," a YouTube spokesperson said in statement shared with 9to5Google.

Google-owned YouTube offers a subscription plan to eliminate the video ads but the price was recently increased in several countries.
