PlayStation said that it will no longer be removing the 1300 TV shows from Discovery by the end of December. Users will retain access for at least the next 30 months. But that is not a solution to the problem.
Earlier this month, PlayStation announced the deletion of users' purchased TV shows from Discovery without refunds, effective December 31, 2023.
This move reignited the debate over digital purchases, raising concerns that the digital purge might extend to other content such as PS5 games bought from the PlayStation Store.
Updated licensing agreements
There is now an update, but unfortunately it does not offer a real solution, and PlayStation has not committed to refunding users for removed shows they have purchased – not rented.
- "Similar to other services, we do not own the licensing rights to TV/movie content that was previously available for purchase on PlayStation Store," PlayStation said in a statement to GamesIndustry.biz.
- "However, we’ve worked with Warner Bros to update our licensing agreements, ensuring that consumers will be able to access their previously purchased content for at least the next 30 months."
In 2022, PlayStation removed all purchased movies from Studio Canal in Germany and Austria without compensation.
