Canvas launches today as a HiFi TV speaker compatible with all TV models

05 Jan 2024 | Rasmus Larsen |

Canvas, a powerful HiFi speaker for TV and music, is launching today worldwide. It is compatible with all TV brands and models, offering both fabric and wooden fronts.

Canvas is making a comeback after not reaching its crowdfunding goal in 2019, now under new ownership but still with the inventor of the original product, Kim Neeper Rasmussen, on board, along with a team of designers.

Canvas can hang on the wall...

When FlatpanelsHD spoke to the team earlier this week, they told us that they have spent the last couple of years ensuring that Canvas is now compatible with all TV models from all major brands in 55, 65, 75, and 77 inches, both OLED and LCD – a significant undertaking due to the varied TV designs and placements of IR diodes.

New design solutions are being introduced to let customers select between 13 finishes in colored fabric or wooden lamellas (light oak, mahogany, walnut). Canvas can be placed on the floor or mounted on the wall, with the TV positioned on top. It can even stand – or hang – alone if you only want to use it as a powerful music speaker.

Upgraded sound and tech

The creators describe it as true HiFi in a TV audio product, but unlike traditional HiFi it has been designed to fit into modern living room decor. Inside the rigid cabinet, there are powerful amplifiers and new speakers, plus room calibration via apps for iOS and Android. Room correction is required to optimize sound to your surroundings but also to enable the Bacch 3D sound implemented in it. This is virtualized 3D sound with crosstalk cancellation, but Dolby Atmos and DTS: X are not supported. There is no option for rear speakers either. FlatpanelsHD listened to the first version of Canvas back in 2019 and left very impressed by both sound quality and the Bacch 3D technology, which has been further refined in the meantime, according to the people behind the project. Canvas far exceeds even premium soundbars but is also more expensive. FlatpanelsHD will get a chance to listen to the final product at CES in Las Vegas next week, where Canvas will be formally introduced to the world. The module inside can be software updated but also, in the future, physically replaced in case new hardware standards emerge – for example HDMI. The current module features HDMI eARC, optical, Apple AirPlay 2, Chromecast, Tidal, Roon, and Spotify Connect for music.

Seamless TV integration

Canvas comes bundled with a universal TV mount adhering to VESA standards, allowing you to mount your existing or future TV screen on top and align things. You select the front design in advance but can buy a new one in the future in case you purchase a larger – or smaller – TV.

One of our most pressing questions to the Canvas team when we spoke to them this week – besides TV compatibility – was about usability. Does it work seamlessly with existing TV remotes or remotes from Apple TV or Google Chromecast by letting HDMI CEC turn on/off Canvas together with the TV and control the volume? We were assured that it does. In the same way, you should be able to play music via AirPlay or Chromecast without turning on your TV screen, and when you do power on your TV, it will take over the audio on Canvas.

Available now, but

Canvas is available starting today worldwide, with a delivery time of 1-2 weeks, but your only option is to purchase it online through canvashifi.com. Currently, Canvas cannot be found in any showroom anywhere – unless you are at CES next week. Will consumers be ready to pay 3000 Euros for a unique and exceptionally powerful, albeit not well-documented, HiFi TV speaker? The team says that they are so confident in the product and the concept that they believe buyers will come once others start buying it and demonstrating it to friends and family, or once reviewers get their hands on it. Pricing:
  • Canvas 55" black front – 2995 Euro
  • Canvas 65" black front – 3020 Euro
  • Canvas 75" black front – 3045 Euro
  • Canvas 77" black front – 3055 Euro
  • Canvas Solo – 2895 Euro
