2024 MLA OLED TV panel to hit 3000 nits, says LG Display

08 Jan 2024 | Rasmus Larsen |

LG Display has today announced that the 2nd generation of its MLA OLED (Micro Lens Array) TV panel will launch in 2024 with up to 3000 nits peak brightness.

Not long after Samsung Display's claim that the 2024 QD-OLED TV panel can hit up to 3000 nits, LG Display is announcing a similar feat for 2024 MLA OLED, also referred to as 'META Technology 2.0'.

- "With peak brightness being a crucial component of higher picture quality, 'META Technology 2.0' features 42% brighter images than conventional OLED displays to achieve 3,000-nit peak brightness. As higher peak brightness ensures a more vivid viewing experience akin to what the human eye perceives, this marks the highest brightness level of any large-sized OLED panel yet," announced LG Display. One again a reminder: LG Display is the manufacturer of the MLA OLED panel that goes into TVs from consumer electronics brands such as LG Electronics, Panasonic and Philips. And while the actual panel may be capable of reaching 3000 nits on panel, we would not expect the finished products to achieve 3000 nits in calibrated HDR mode. Our reviews later this year will reveal the actual performance.

2nd Gen MLA OLED technology

LG Display's MLA technology uses tiny micro lenses to extract more of the generated light from the panel, leading to improved efficiency. For example, there are a total of 42.4 billion micro lenses in the 77-inch 2024 MLA OLED TV panel. - "META Technology 2.0 comprises ‘Micro Lens Array Plus (MLA+)’ featuring a pattern of optimized micrometer-scale lenses, the upgraded brightness enhancing algorithm ‘META Multi Booster,’ and the full-range brightness detail enhancing algorithm 'Detail Enhancer,' which all combine to achieve a new maximum brightness of 3,000 nits, allowing the OLED panel to express the precise colors and brightness nature intended in any environment," explained LG Display. LG Display added that 2024 MLA OLED "achieves improved color brightness of up to 1,500 nits, 114% brighter than conventional OLEDs" and that there is a 'Detail Enhancer' algorithm to help especially bring out the darkest details. MLA OLED also offers other advantages such as even wider viewing angles and a new display panel coating for fewer reflections. The 2nd generation MLA OLED panel will be available in 55, 65, 77 and 83 inches. LG Electronics has already announced the G4 and M4 models that will incorporate the panel while Panasonic has announced the 55 and 65-inch Z95A.
