Apple opens App Store to game streaming apps like Xbox & GeForce Now

26 Jan 2024 | Rasmus Larsen |

The change is being rolled out worldwide and will enable game streaming services such as Xbox, GeForce Now, Amazon Luna, and soon Netflix to offer cloud gaming on Apple devices.
Update 28.1.2024: The change to allow cloud gaming apps worldwide applies to all of Apple's platforms, including tvOS on Apple TV, according to 9to5Mac.
In contrast to Apple's upcoming change to allow alternative app stores on its iOS devices in EU countries, as mandated by the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA), the decision to permit game streaming – or cloud gaming – is voluntary and applies globally. - "Today, Apple is introducing new options for how apps globally can deliver in-app experiences to users, including streaming games and mini-programs. Developers can now submit a single app with the capability to stream all of the games offered in their catalog," announced Apple.

Game Streaming on Apple TV?

The company did not provide further details and did not specify if some of its platforms are excluded. If no exclusions are in place, the change opens the door to game streaming subscription services, such as Xbox, GeForce Now, Amazon Luna, and soon Netflix, to offer cloud gaming on Apple TV, Mac, iPad and iPhone using a compatible game controller, including Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox controllers. - "Each experience made available in an app on the App Store will be required to adhere to all App Store Review Guidelines and its host app will need to maintain an age rating of the highest age-rated content included in the app," explained Apple. Apple and Microsoft clashed over this exact issue in 2020 and did not at the time reach a compromise that allowed Microsoft to move forward. At that time, Google's Stadia was also in the game, but Google has since abandoned Stadia.
