Apple & Universal's 'Argylle' debuts in High Frame Rate in theaters globally

01 Feb 2024 | Rasmus Larsen |

The new Matthew Vaughn film Argylle will premiere this weekend in cinematic High Frame Rate (HFR), motion graded using TrueCut Motion, in select premium theaters globally.

James Cameron and Disney were the first to embrace the TrueCut Motion format for cinematic High Frame Rate (HFR) movies, including Avatar: The Way of Water. Unlike earlier HFR releases such as The Hobbit, TrueCut Motion enables filmmakers to motion grade movies shot in any frame rate, reducing judder and allowing the filmmaker to fine-tune motion as needed for each scene while preserving the cinematic look.

Today, Pixelworks, the company behind TrueCut Motion, confirmed that more Hollywood studios are joining, and you only have to wait one more day to see the new spy thriller Argylle, starring Henry Cavill and Sam Rockwell, in this new HFR format.

- "Pixelworks announced today that the phenomenal new Matthew Vaughn film Argylle, will be presented in select theaters worldwide in the award-winning TrueCut Motion format, bringing the stunning visual imagery of the razor-witted, reality-bending, globe-encircling spy thriller to premium theatrical screens in cinematic high-frame-rate; unlocking crystal clear motion playback on the brightest, exceptional high contrast, high quality screens beloved by audiences everywhere."

'Argylle' in High Frame Rate

So far, FlatpanelsHD has been able to confirm via sources that Argylle will screen in cinematic HFR at Dolby Cinema in AMC Theaters across the US and on Cinity screens at Cineplex Theaters in Germany. Check with your local theater to be sure. The movie will be presented in 2D 48fps cinematic HFR in the premium theaters and standard 24fps in other theaters around in the world. Theatrical distribution of Argylle is managed by Universal Pictures, while its home distribution is handled by Apple.

Cinematic HFR is gaining momentum

It remains to be seen in what format Argylle will be distributed at home, but we believe there is a good chance it will be available in HFR via streaming. Earlier this week, Disney announced a multi-year deal with Pixelworks to bring multiple HFR movies to the home. At launch, Disney's HFR movies are available on Apple Vision Pro. As we reported a few days ago, Pixelworks is also in discussions with major TV makers about a certification program to ensure native playback of TrueCut Motion titles. Disney and Universal ranked as the top-2 companies in terms of theatrical box office revenue last year, while Apple is a juggernaut in the consumer space.
