LG details plans for webOS upgrade of 2022–2024 OLED, LCD TVs

2022 and 2023 LG models will also get Chromecast when upgraded to webOS 24 next year, as webOS upgrades will be one year delayed compared to the webOS version in LG's latest TVs.

Late last year – a decade after launching its webOS TV platform – LG finally committed to start upgrading webOS in TVs. The initiative includes some older models from 2022 and 2023.

The company refers to it as the 'webOS ReNew program' and has pledged to provide four webOS version upgrades over the course of five years. For example, a 2024 LG OLED TV that comes pre-installed with webOS 24 will receive webOS 25, webOS 26, webOS 27, and eventually webOS 28, spanning a five-year period.

A 1-year delay

During a launch event in Frankfurt, Germany, attended by FlatpanelsHD, LG outlined its plans for webOS upgrades of 2022, 2023 and 2024 models, as depicted in the chart below. Previously, LG had indicated that there would be a delay in webOS upgrades. It now confirms that this delay will be approximately one year compared to the latest TV models, meaning that the latest version of webOS will still be reserved for the newest TV models.

The company argued that the reason it is delaying releases is to ensure stability and performance when a newer version of webOS is installed on older hardware. However, it is evident to us that this strategy also serves to maintain focus on the newest TV models. As part of next year's webOS 24 upgrade, both 2022 and 2023 LG models will receive Chromecast support, enabling users to wirelessly push media content from a smartphone or tablet onto the TV screen. This addition comes alongside a refreshed webOS user interface in full-screen with an increased amount of ads.
