Review: LG's 173" microLED TV is real - and user-customizable

|

LG has given us the first glimpse of its 173-inch microLED based TV and its ”ability to customize screen sizes according to user needs”.

173” microLED TV

Reports out of Korea had claimed that LG would unveil, at IFA 2018 in Berlin, to the world a microLED display larger than Samsung Electronics' 146-inch ’The Wall’.

It is real. LG has just confirmed the existance of the gigantic TV at IFA 2018 in Berlin. Besides being 173 inches in diagonal, it is based on novel microLED display technology and built from modules. LG touts the ability to ”customize screen sizes according to user needs”.

- ”The screen will be located in a dramatic home cinema environment that highlights its ability to customize screen sizes according to user needs,” the company said.

LG used the opportunity to call it ”revolutionary” but did not offer many details, not even its resolution. At IFA 2018, LG will also be showcasing the first 8K OLED TV but we suspect that the much larger microLED TV will actually have lower resolution.

- ”The revolutionary 173-inch Micro LED display consists of arrays of microscopic LEDs that form individual pixels,” LG explained

microLED is a novel display technology that uses tiny light emitting diodes. Like OLED, it is a self-emitting display technology, meaning that each pixel generates its own light. No backlight unit is required. The technology is said to be capable of reaching far higher brightness than OLED but the challenge here is to slim down the microLED array. That is why you are seeing Samsung and LG shwocase huge microLED TVs rather than sets that fit into actual living room.

We will of course chase more details when the show floors open at IFA 2018 but until then you can start taking measurements of your walls at home. 173 inches corresponds to 4,4 meters in diagonal.
