Review: Samsung's 2022 soundbars support wireless TV-to-soundbar Dolby Atmos

|

Samsung's new soundbars for 2022 include the 11.1.4-channel flagship HW-Q990B, the HW-Q930B and the compact HW-S800B. They can connect wirelessly to Samsung 2022 TVs.

Wireless Dolby Atmos

If you buy a 2022 Samsung TV (QN80B and up) and a 2022 Samsung soundbar, the two devices can connect wirelessly – no HDMI cable required. It is a WiFi-based system that can handle audio formats up to Dolby Atmos. - "Samsung’s 2022 soundbars also come with Wireless Dolby Atmos connectivity, a wireless Smart TV-to-soundbar connection in which both the screen and soundbar speakers deliver an incredible audio experience with no distracting cables," announced Samsung.

Samsung's new flagship HW-Q990B is the successor to last year's HW-Q950A. It is still a 11.1.4-channel system with up-firing and side-firing speakers in the soundbar as well as discreet rear speakers with up-firing and side-firing units. It comes with a redesigned subwoofer. It supports both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. We saw and heard it demonstrated at CES 2022 and performance is similar to last year's model. The wireless link worked as intended without delay or latency during the demonstration, but it is not clear if there are limitations as compared to an HDMI audio connection – we are chasing answers. It will come with subwoofer and rear speakers in the box but unlike the HW-Q990B the rear speakers will not include side-firing units. We were told that the Q930B soundbar will not be as tall as Q990B either but only saw Q990B. In addition, Samsung announced HW-S800B, which is a slim and compact soundbar with nine speaker drivers in total plus a separate subwoofer. It measures just 3.6 cm in depth and 3.8 cm in height. S800B is also equipped with up-firing speakers for Dolby Atmos.

Samsung has improved its 'Q Symphony' system that lets the user connect the soundbar to a compatible Samsung TV and still use the TV speakers in sync. In 2022, the system can utilize all of the TV's speakers including the top channel speakers, for up to 22 channels of audio with Samsung's QN900B flagship 8K TV. The 2022 soundbar line-up will also include other models (such as the 3.1.2ch HW-Q700B) that will be announced later.
