Thank you Rasmus. Great review! Extremely interesting.

As LG has reached expectations with this flagship TV, the question is when the LG7700 will arrive? It is supposed to be with Nano LED but without front glass in comparison with LW9800.

Is it going to arrive and the only question is when, or perhaps nothing is sure at this moment?

Hi, many thanks for a very detailed and thorough review.

I have the 980S on order but have some concerns regarding the dimming zones.

You stated that these had been increased but can you confirm exactly how many were on the model you reviewed please?

The current marketing data suggests it should be as high as 288 for the 55" model.

However, a customer in germany (with the 980s model) was only able to count 96.

Thanks for your thoughts on this...

Thanks for the very thorough review. JUst a couple of questions. Would you say the LW980's 2D performance was much of an improvement on last year's LG local-dimming sets (the LE8500/8900s and LX9500/9900s), and are the viewing angles better or much the same? Thanks in advance.

@Rasmus

My question also.

In this .pdf from LG you can read on page 46 that the 47 inch as 72 blocks (dimming zones), and the 55 inch has 96 blocks.

Here you can see someone has counted the 96 blocks.

Thanks for the thorough and mostly positive review. I do have a couple of questions. The first is in regards to the panel type, do you know if the panel is comprised of LG's new AH-IPS panel or a P-IPS? And my other question about the calibration is did you by any chance do any more advanced calibrating to it (using advanced calibration tools, etc that would require a very knowledgeable and professional calibrator to do, etc?).

I do hope that LG will come out with a firmware update that could possibly fix a bit of the issue with the color gradient in the semi-dark and dark areas (which make that you mentioned that make it hard to somewhat distinguish). Doing this could help to push this tv to be a more top-notch and reference-like model, especially for the asking price they have attached to this. I also hope the firmware could also help to eliminate or at least reduce the the slightly increased haloing and slightly worse shadowing (that you described) when the LED local dimming is turned up to the medium setting.

As for the smart tv features, I'm sure there will be some future firmware/software updates that will improve the smart TV features and make this tv an even better overall tv!

Once again, thanks for the thorough and positive review Rasmus!!!

Cheers,
Jeremy

P.S. were you able to confirm that there are 288 zones as advertised in the marketing of this tv?

@Rasmus

Excellent review - many thanks!

You say "It is not the absolute best TV out there but it is one of the best LCD/LED TVs today"

What would you say IS the absolute best TV out there? And if this is ONE of the best LCD/LED TV's what would say is the absolute BEST LCD/LED TV please?

I'm thinking about buying a new TV i was very impressed by the NANO technology but i dont care about features like Smart TV or thickness all i care is picture quality in 2D which one do you think is the best in that category:LG LW9800 or Panasonic 55VT30 or Sony HX929 or Samsung 55D8000?

According to what I heard at IFA in Berlin the LW7700 is no more. After the switch to Cinema 3D LG has decided not to release it :(

Yes I saw that and the YouTube video. Looks strange. We are currently trying to get some official words about this.

The 2D picture quality is only an incremental improvement in my opinion. Viewing angles have not changed much.

I'm not sure about the IPS generation, sorry..

We try to keep our calibration down to the basics because we want our reader to benefit from our findings. To me there is no point in doing a total calibration and then "brag" about it because it just means that our readers are left in the dark. A full calibration is not possible to dublicate on other TVs.

Maybe, let's hope :)

It's always a tough one. Personally I believe that the Panasonic VT30 is the best TV right now but it also presupposes that one can live with the shortcomings of the current plasma technology. In the recent years I believe LCD/LED models have narrowed the gap, and today it is largely a personal choice.

The Sharp X5 model seems to be in that league as well but I haven't had the opportunity to see it yet. That is why I'm cautious to use the "Absolute Best TV" label.

See my previous answer :)

Compared to the D8000, I certainly think LW9800 has the edge. In my part of the world LW9800 is significantly cheaper than the Sony HX929 and therefore LW9800 is also my preferable choice when comparing these two.

In last year LG high-end models (LX8000 and LX9000), reflections due to the glass cover were one of the main issues.

In this LW9800 review it is written that front cover is not pure glass and yes something closer to plastic.

Rasmus, do you think this TV has less reflections than last year LG models, or it is exactly the same?
