Sony X900H/XH90: New firmware with official VRR mode & HGiG rolling out – update

27 Oct 2021 | Rasmus Larsen |

Sony has started rolling out the second firmware required for VRR mode on X900H (US) and XH90 (Europe). The same firmware adds the two new PlayStation 5 features.
Update 01.12.2021: Firmware is now officially available in Europe too with a new firmware version number (v6.1554). See the table at the bottom.

Second VRR firmware

In early October, Sony started rolling out the first (v.6.1288) of two firmwares required for the long-awaited VRR mode on the X900H / XH90 models from 2020. The new firmware, which started rolling out this week, is the second firmware required for VRR mode, Sony confirmed to FlatpanelsHD today. It is available now for manual download (see table) in the US, Europe (available as v6.1554), and other regions, and should soon appear through your TV's built-in update menu too. We have not been able to test VRR mode on X900H / XH90 after the second update but we would not expect major changes in terms of LED local dimming. All current LCD TVs disengage or reduce local dimming to a minimum in VRR mode. As for VRR on other LCD and OLED models, Sony said: "The timing is still under consideration, but we can assure you that the update will arrive later this year".

New PS5-centric features

Although not highlighted in the changelog, firmware v6.1534 / v6.1554 also appears to enable both of the new PS5-centric features; Auto HDR Tone Mapping (based on HGiG) and Auto Genre Picture Mode (based on ALLM). Users are reporting that PlayStation 5 can now automatically detect Sony X900H / XH90 and optimize HDR tone-mapping based on the TV's capabilities – fully automatic like HGiG was always intended to work.

The same PS5-centric features will come to Sony's A80J, A90J, X80J, X85J, X90J, X95J and Z9J models later this year. It has been an extraordinarily long wait for owners of Sony X900H / XH90 but you will have to wait a little longer still to enjoy all of the new features with PlayStation 5 as the console will require a system update to enable VRR output.
