LG's new Flex OLED TV can go from flat to curved in 20 steps

31 Aug 2022 | Rasmus Larsen |

At IFA 2022, LG has announced its first bendable OLED TV, LG Flex. The 42-inch TV can go from flat to curved in 20 steps with the push of a button.

Last week, Corsair announced an OLED monitor that the user can bend manually. LG's first bendable OLED is an actual TV that doubles as a gaming screen, and it is equipped with a motor so you don't even have to lift your arms when you want it curve or go back to flat screen mode.

Basically a bendable LG C2

From a technical standpoint, LG Flex (model name LX3) is basically a bendable version of the 42-inch LG C2. It features 4K resolution (3840x2160) in 16:9 aspect ratio, 'OLED Evo' (but not the Brightness Booster), four HDMI 2.1 inputs, TV tuners, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos. On top of that you get WiFi 6 and – unlike LG C2 – a new less reflective coating with 25% less reflectance as compared to LG OLED TVs. Why would consumers want a bendable TV? The South Korean company argues that the curve is popular with gamers while a flat screen ideal for most other scenaries. LG Flex provides the flexibility to do both, depending on the situation. It can curve up to 900R, with two programmable quick settings.

Cloud gaming built in

LG Flex comes with webOS, including the Game Optimizer, built in meaning that you have access to cloud gaming apps such as Google Stadia and Nvidia GeForce Now. The company hinted that it has more some cloud gaming new to announce soon. As highlighted by LG, you don't even need a PC or game console but it obviously helps if you want the best gaming experience in 4K HDR. In terms of gaming, LG Flex has been designed to work with PCs, game console, and cloud gaming. It has four HDMI 2.1 ports but no DisplayPort inputs. So far, LG has announced only a 42-inch version – most likely to test the waters for this new type of product – and has not said how much it will cost. FlatpanelsHD will get a chance to see LG Flex later this week at IFA 2022 in Berlin and we publish hands-on impressions soon.
