Here's webOS 24, coming to 2024 LG TVs and 2022 OLED TVs

LG's latest version of webOS, version 24, will become more customizable with new features. More importantly, LG will bring webOS 24 to OLED TVs from 2022, and more models later.

In late December 2023, LG finally committed to upgrading webOS in older TVs for 4 years after launch.

Today, the company has confirmed that all 2022 OLED TVs (A2, B2, C2, CS, G2, Z2), LG OLED Flex (from late 2022) and LG OLED Object TVs (from mid-2022), as well as 2022 8K LCD TVs, will also be upgraded to webOS 24, with additional unspecified models getting the upgrade later. LG did not comment specifically on 2023 models.

- "In early 2024, the webOS Re:New program will bring the latest webOS upgrade to every model in LG’s 2022 OLED TV lineup, LG OLED Flex, LG OLED Objet Collection Posé, as well as LG’s 2022 QNED Mini LED 8K (QNED99/95 series), promising users the joy of a new TV experience for the next five years. This upgrade will be extended to more LG TVs worldwide in the future to add more entertainment and versatility to the TV experience across the world," announced LG.

LG confirmed to FlatpanelsHD that it will be a full upgrade to webOS 24 in 2022 models rather than a new skin, like the skin that was recently rolled out to 2020 and 2019 models. Last year, the company announced a transformation into a "smart life solution company," a shift toward focusing more on services and ads on its TVs. By upgrading webOS, LG can deliver these services and ads to more users, generating recurring revenue.

What's new in webOS 24

2024 marks the 10th year since the launch of webOS in LG TVs, during which webOS's user interface has evolved from the popular bottom bar to full-screen. webOS 24 is still in full screen and has a slightly tweaked design over webOS 23 from 2023, now with the user profile picker, notifications, settings, and search to the left. At the top is a large ad spot, with five more ad spots at the bottom.

Another change in webOS 24 is that 'Cards', seen in the second row, are now "dynamic", meaning that you can hover over them to reveal more functions. LG said that the cards are customizable, but it is unclear what this entails. User profile support has been expanded in webOS 24 for up to 10 profiles, each with a unique PIN if desired. Each user profile can also have its own picture settings, according to LG, although we are not yet sure if there are any limitations. An upcoming feature in the US and Korea, which requires new firmware, is that the voice system can detect different voices and automatically switch to this user's profile. In addition, webOS 24 supports an array of accessibility features, including new menu settings, sign language avatars, remote control tutorials, and guides for quick problem resolution, including a chatbot. There is also an option to watch in grayscale. As announced earlier, 2024 LG models will feature both Apple AirPlay 2 and for the first time Chromecast, but at the time of writing it is unclear if earlier LG OLED models will receive Chromecast as part of the webOS 24 upgrade.

300 million webOS devices by 2026

LG said that it intends "to invest heavily in its webOS business" that currently powers more than 200 million LG TVs around the globe, with a goal of reaching 300 million devices – not just TVs – by 2026. - "Demonstrated by the constant improvement to the webOS platform's UX and UI, LG is firmly dedicated to elevating convenience and security, ensuring that users benefit from a hassle-free and secure experience when using our products," said Baik Seon-pill, leader of the LG HE Product Planning. "We strive to provide life-enriching experiences for our customers by delivering a wide range of content and services on our TVs."
