Each year at the SID Conference, the display industry gathers to show off all of the new display advances and technologies. Therefore, it is noteworthy that this years’ ”2012 Display of the Year Award” goes to a glasses-free 3D display panel.
Glasses-free 3D TVs coming?
3D TVs have not been the next big thing that TV manufacturers had hoped but there is still hope with glasses-free 3D. The manufacturers are still developing 3D technologies and Taiwanese AUO is one of the most enthusiastic display makers in the 3D field right now.
AUO’s glasses-free 3D panel wins Display of the Year Award
The panel can output both 2D and 3D without the need for 3D glasses. Most glasses-free 3D TV prototypes to date have not been able to output 2D. The panel uses a 4Kx2K (or 3840x2160 pixels) resolution. The high resolution enables AUO to reach a high level of 3D detailing. 3D images can be watched from a total of 9 simultaneous angles and are adjusted with the help of an eye-tracking camera. AUO also says that no dead spots occur.
It appears that real glasses-free 3D TVs are nearing. But will it change your attitude towards 3D? Will you be likely to pay more for glasses-free 3D functionality in your next TV?
