Those Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films that have yet to appear on UHD Blu-ray are currently being remastered in 4K resolution, the company confirmed in an interview with Collider.
All Marvel films in 4K
Disney has released most of its recent Marvel films on UHD Blu-ray but several back catalog titles are still missing, including the Iron Man trilogy, Guardians of the Galaxy, two Thor tiles, Doctor Strange, and Ant-Man.
In an interview (see video below) with Captain Marvel producers Victoria Alonso and Jonathan Schwartz, it was confirmed that these titles are currently being remastered in 4K for home release.
- "We are going to remaster all of our films in 4K. We’re in the process of doing that, so it’s all happening."
Marvel's 4K transfers tend to look great so this is obviously something that will excite many viewers. However, many details are still missing and it is not clear if Disney will continue to disregard Dolby Vision for its UHD Blu-ray releases, reserving the premium HDR format for online digital releases.
Some retailers are already accepting pre-orders for the Iron Man and Thor UHD Blu-ray releases that are expected to arrive in August or September. Captain Marvel will arrive tomorrow on June 11.
Disney is gearing up to launch its Disney+ streaming service later this year but has not said whether it will support 4K HDR streaming at launch. The company did say, however, that it will continue to release its titles on physical media after the launch of Disney+.
